Day safaris from Anuradhapura into Sri Lanka's largest national park

Wilpattu Safari – Jeep Safaris in Wilpattu National Park

What Is a Wilpattu Safari?

A Wilpattu safari is a guided jeep drive through Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka's largest and oldest reserve, known for its villu lakes, leopards and sloth bears. Goalma runs morning, evening and full-day Wilpattu safaris from Anuradhapura — about an hour by road to the park gate — with a maximum of six guests per jeep, from $65.00 per person.

We would rather be honest than impressive. Every rate includes an experienced local tracker, park entry, jeep fees and refreshments. What it does not include is a guaranteed leopard — Wilpattu is wild, and that is exactly why it is worth the early start.

Which Wilpattu Safari Should You Choose?

Three Wilpattu safari departures run every day. The morning half-day safari (6:00 AM–12:00 PM) catches the most active wildlife movement and the best birding. The evening half-day safari (2:00 PM–6:00 PM) is the shortest and the best value. The full-day Wilpattu safari (6:00 AM–5:00 PM) covers the most ground, reaches the far villus and includes breakfast and lunch.

Where is Wilpattu ?

Wilpattu National Park — also written Wilpaththu — lies in the north-west of Sri Lanka, about 30 km from Anuradhapura and roughly an hour from our door by road. It covers over 130,000 hectares and borders the Indian Ocean.

Wilpattu Safari Questions, Answered

  • How much does a Wilpattu safari cost?

Prices start at $65.00 per person for the evening half-day safari, $70.00 for the morning half-day and $75.00 for the full-day safari, based on six guests sharing one jeep. Smaller groups pay more per person. Park entrance tickets, jeep fees, water and refreshments are included in every rate.

  • How long is a Wilpattu safari?

The evening half-day safari runs 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the morning half-day safari 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and the full-day safari 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Add roughly an hour of road travel each way if you are starting from Anuradhapura.

  • How far is Wilpattu National Park from Anuradhapura?

About 30 km, or roughly an hour by road. We collect you from your Anuradhapura hotel at 5:00 AM for a morning or full-day safari and at 1:00 PM for an evening safari, then drive you to the park entrance near Nochchiyagama where you transfer to the jeep.

  • What animals might I see on a Wilpattu safari?

Wilpattu has Sri Lanka's highest leopard density, along with sloth bears, elephants, spotted and sambar deer, mugger crocodiles, monitor lizards and more than 200 bird species. Nothing is guaranteed — our trackers read fresh signs each morning and plan the route around them.

  • When is the best time of year for a Wilpattu safari?

The drier months, roughly February to October, give the best odds because animals gather at the villu lakes. June to September is the busiest stretch for leopard and sloth bear sightings. The green season after the monsoon is quieter, greener and excellent for birds.

  • Do you pick up from hotels outside Anuradhapura?

Yes. The Anuradhapura rate covers pickup within 3 km of the city, and the Wilpattu-area rate covers hotels within 5 km of the park. If you are staying somewhere else, message us on WhatsApp and we will quote the transfer before you book.
