  • The best time to arrive

    We aim to have you on the rock about ninety minutes before sunset — usually a pickup between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM depending on the month. That leaves time to walk the terraces in soft light and settle at the top before the sun goes down, which happens around 6:00 PM for most of the year.

  • What the climb is like

    It is a granite stairway of roughly 1,840 steps, cut in wide, shallow flights with level landings — steady rather than steep. Most reasonably fit visitors take 30 to 45 minutes at a comfortable pace. Shoes come off at the upper terraces, so bring socks.

  • How Goalma gets you there

    Mihintale is about 13 km east of Anuradhapura — allow around an hour by tuk-tuk. We collect you from your hotel, cover the parking, wait through the climb and the sunset, and drive you back after dark. The rate is $25.00 for up to three guests, and a licensed guide can join for $25.00.

  • What you can see from the top

    From the Maha Seya terrace the view runs west over Anuradhapura's stupas and the ancient tanks, and east across paddy and scrub jungle. The Ambasthala dagoba and the Aradhana Gala meditation rock sit alongside, so the sunset comes with the site's founding story attached.

    Sunset near Anuradhapura falls between roughly 5:55 PM and 6:25 PM through the year, earliest in November and latest in June. We time the pickup so you are on the upper terraces well before it, with enough daylight left to see the site properly first.

  • How many steps are there at Mihintale?

    About 1,840 granite steps in several broad flights, with level terraces between them. It is a walk rather than a scramble and there are shaded places to stop. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to the top if you are not in a hurry.

  • How much is the Mihintale sunset tour?

    $25.00 per tuk-tuk for up to three guests, including hotel pickup, drop-off and parking. A licensed live guide is $25.00 per trip on request. The Mihintale site entry ticket is not included and is paid at the gate.
